There is a Problem with the Blu Ray Version! December 16, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I've watched all three Resident Evil films and they're not bad. Resident Evil- Extinction in my opinion was probably the best of the three. No, I can't compare them to the videogames because I never played the videogames, so I can only compare them to other films in the "zombie" genre. They are all three decent films and each builds on the previous film. The first movie is concentrated on a particular location: the mysterious underground research facility under "Raccoon City", sometime in the future, where a research virus breaks out and turns both people and animals into undead zombies. In the second film, the virus has spread above ground and all of Raccoon City, if not the US, is affected. In this last movie, the virus has gone worldwide. I'm a big fan of "bonus features" on DVD. Sometimes you watch a movie and think umph--second-rate, if that. Then you watch some of the "bonus features" in which the director, the actors and actresses, the photographers and others involved talk about all the work they went through to produce the film--down to incredible little details, little minutiae that flash through in an instant of the final movie--you think about the hundreds of person-years that went into the making of the movie, the blood, sweat and tears, how hard they worked, and you end up thinking, "yeah, that WAS pretty cool actually how they did that--I never really thought how hard that was--actually that was a decent film..." [Other times I've watched special features and concluded the film was still terrible..] In this case, some of the special features on DVD were quite interesting and added value. In addition, some of the visuals in this movie were stunning. That's why I ended up getting the Blu-Ray version, after already owning the regular DVD version. Not once, but twice getting the Blu-Ray version. Neither time would the Blu-Ray version play properly. Not in just one player, either. I have two (different, and rather new) Blu-Ray players for TVs, and two Blu-Ray players built into computers, and the discs would not play in any of the 4 Blu-Ray players. First I got the 3-movie trilogy (plus a bonus disc). The first 2 movies play just fine, but "Extinction" did really bizarre things, but DOES NOT PLAY A MOVIE. I figured maybe that was just one defective disc. I went out and bought a stand-alone Blu-Ray version of RE-Extinction on Blu-Ray, brought it home, and it did EXACTLY THE SAME THING. I have not had this problem with any other Blu Ray product and am surprised that no other reviewer seems to have complained. WARNING: you may have a problem with this product in Blu-Ray version! It's possible not all discs are affected, but some seem to not play properly AT ALL! The movie itself is definitely worth watching if you like the genre. K. Weaver
Zombies doing what they do best! December 13, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm not sure what all the griping is about this film. Do critics not understand the concept of science fiction? Science fiction: a broad genre of fiction that often involves speculations based on current or future science or technology. Get that Entertainment Weekly? It's not supposed to be realistic. I've had it about up to my a** with these paint-chip eating movie critics who grouse to the edge of galactic hell space about bad scripts and lack of originality. Three zombies are about to jump you and eat you alive, what are you supposed to say?
"O that this too too sullied flesh would melt, Thaw, and resolve itself into a dew!"
No, more likely it will be "Son of a B." or "F me, these zombies are really hungry." Apologies to all you haughty gas-inhaling elitists who deride every sci-fi film if it is not a Brothers Karamazov parable set in the future. Sometimes a biotechnology corporation, let's say a company called Umbrella Corp., takes things just a little bit too far and unfortunately we end up with a zombie apocalypse. These things happen. Then a group of people - not necessarily thespians of Shakespearean cogency, mind you - get some guns together and form a little brigade that marauders about killing zombies in a search of an antigen that will save the rest of humanity. And sometimes they will come upon a big box in the middle of the desert, that for no apparent reason happens to be filled with zombies. Oh the humanity. Let us all now go bathe, lest our sullied flesh melt after bearing witness to this squalid spectacle, meant so unmistakenly only for the coarse, unwashed masses, who cannot discern TRUE art from a grimy simulacrum of it. Such is the onerous existence of a film critic.

From J. Kaye's Book Blog November 24, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I walked away pleased with this latest installment. Compare with the others before, this one isn't as good. Even so, I loved it. In this sequel, Alice has been hiding in the Nevada desert, staying one step ahead of the zombies that have basically taken over the world. She once again joins forces with friends of the past in order to find a safe haven. Her enemy isn't just the undead, but the Umbrella Corporation as well. The action in this move was so good, it left me with goose bumps. Also, the ending leaves plenty of room for the fourth in this series. I don't think Resident Evil fans will be disappointed. I wasn't.
