One of the most engaging and entertaining games available November 16, 2008 I was never a huge fan of the GTA series but I knew that the this one was going to blow everyone away... and it certainly did. Beginning with the 1997 release of the original Grand Theft Auto, the GTA series has been one of the most prolific, controversial and down right entertaining franchises in video games history. First of all GTA 4 is fantastic full of mouth watering visuals down to the weeds growing in the cracks in the sidewalk, cars and buildings of all heights and the unbelievable NPCs who are intelligent, modern, human representations that laugh, cry, eat, drink, use cell phones and ATMs, and talking amongst themselves regardless of Niko's interaction with them. However the subject that really stands out is the gameplay with massive improvements since the previous one with an improve combat system and modern features such as a mobile phone which runs the show and a social where you can have a girlfriend. With players experiencing entirely new and exciting emphasis centered on the blending of on-mission and off-mission play, resulting in an increased sense of realism and more interesting and unrestricted gameplay.
An outstanding and a first to the GTA franchise is the new multiplayer modes allowing you to play online in competitive, co-op, and free form modes. Competitive mode has you fighting against the cops, jacking cars, or racing to finish odd jobs.
GTA 4 others so much more to the series than ever before with a polished story line with a slick script, detailed world of the modern New York City, releastic social life full of gentleman's clubs, comedy clubs, bowling alleys, and bars, which all house unique activities, an environment which you can interact with, with 4 islands to explore, plenty of side missions and of course a very entertaining multiplayer with plenty to do for several months or years to come. A must have for console owners.
Great November 11, 2008 cd looks like it is brand new (no scratches). Got here in 3 business days
More Realistic Then Older GTA's November 8, 2008 GTA4 didn't disappoint me with it's gritty realism. I think I will be playing the game for years to come, just like how I still play GTA: 3/VC/SA every now and then. There are some small differences between GTA3 engine renditions and this new GTA4. These "small" differences make a huge difference to the overall experisance. You don't play GTA4 to go on a rampage without any guns and expect to survive for very long at all. You don't drive full speed through the city in GTA4 and expect to survive for very long (you will fly right out your windshield if you aren't careful and it will hurt). GTA4 has lost a lot of the "rampage" feel to it, but the added realism makes it fun in it's own way. (try Saints Row 2 if you want a rampage game).
Absolutely amazing....but the best has yet to come... October 31, 2008 I am a fanatic of the GTA series but I can tell you about 50 things which I absolutely hate about this game. Taking into account those 50 flaws or shortcomings, in my opinion, this is still by far the best video game I have ever played. I'm just trying to be patient and wait for DLC in hopes that the makers will add some player/weapon/vehicle customization, mission variety, meaningful content (as opposed to going bowling with your friends) and make the game more challenging. Either way, I'm glad Rockstar laid down this amazingly stunning and realistic foundation of Grand Theft Auto on to the xbox360/PS3 consoles and that going forward we should only see improvements via DLC, GTA V, etc.
Probably the worst game, I've ever played! October 27, 2008 5 out of 9 found this review helpful
I barrowed this from a friend who hasn't played the game in months, and I asked him, why, what's wrong with the game? His response was "You won't like it and i'll even give you a month to try it out". Turns out he was right, within a week I gave it back to him, due to the unbelievable amount of bs this games subjects you to.
First off, The controls for this game are straight garbage! Let me repeat that! PURE UTTER GARBAGE! Seriously, who wants to spend precious time toggling through weapons during an intense fire fight? WTF! Saints Row got it right, all you had to do was press and hold the B button and you were able to select whatever weapons you had in your arsenal. What happened to simple controls, like Halo 3, where you press one button and you're able to cycle through all the weapon in your possession. I don't know if this happens to other players, but Niko sometimes takes off without me touching the controls, again the controls suck because of this. Rockstar, address this issue or all your fans will be running to other gaming titles!
Secondly, the load times for this game are abominable; the time it takes this game to load are INEXCUSABLE. This probably my second biggest complaint about this game, did they seriously test this game before releasing it to the massess?
Third, the driving is a complete NIGHTMARE! Regardless of the car you drive, one little slight movement of the wheel and you're all over the place. Last I checked I wasn't driving some 1100 HP twin charged supercar, am I missing something here? I mean what's the point of driving especially the bikes when they are undriveable? During missions where you're required to chase or run from enemies this is where you really notice just how bad the driving on this game really is. My goodness, I failed more missions due to the poor handling these cars provide you in the game. What were they trying to accomplish by making everything undriveable?
Next we have the running, hmmph! Talking about being unrealistic -- What's the point of running away from a guy if they can catch up to you? Let's be honest a heavy set man or woman weighing at in at 300 lbs has no business keeping up with a slim seemingly in-shape guy, come on, WTF! During an intese firefight with the cops, I ran because my life was low, and while I'm running I looked behind me, and get this; this fat cop is literally runnnig stride for stride with me, WTF? I guess everybody on the game has the speed of Usain Bolt, because out running people on here is a joke.
Since when did fighting become a community effort? You attack one person, and you're getting swarmed by 3 or more people, if things were like that in the real world then I would understand, but come on, how are you supposed to enjoy getting killed by average people ganging up on you.
Camera control, I think I've spent more time fighting with the camera control then I did with the bad guys, COME ON, this is by far the main reason why I stopped playing this game. Why can't the camera simply look where you're looking, not where it wants to look, for corns sake.
Missions: got old VERY quick, and are really difficult especially if you lack the patience as I do, and for what? To do another pointless bs mission, they really had no directions or true sense of accomplishments after completing them. The storyline, It completely didn't have any point to it, oh wait, it did sex, drugs, killing, racism and more of the same. Safe to say, I could have constructed a far better plot than this.
The good thing about all of this was, I didn't give Rockstar any money for this game, as I barrowed it from a friend, and I'm glad I wasn't in line waiting for this game or else I would have been severely disappointed. So hopefully my review will serve as a wakeup call to those seriously thinking about purchasing this game, cause it's not worth it.
