4 out of 5 stars Better picture but LOUD while playing 360 games   April 30, 2007
10 out of 13 found this review helpful

Having owned the Premium for 7 months now I have really loved the machine. I anticipated the Elite release yesterday and was all but happy to buy another 360- The Elite ver. I am currently more than impressed with the HDMI signal as it is an improvement over component by far. No more jagged line when I turn really fast in Lost Planet- details in LOTR BFME II look great! But- only 1 complaint- the spinning disc tray or fans- (not sure which one really) is LOUDER than my premium. I can tell the disc trays are different as the one in my Elite seems more finickey.
Visuals are way better though. A give and take- that is why I have given this 4 stars. Note to Microsoft: I would and wanted to give this system 5 stars and all the praise in the world but you had to chince out of the parts!! (I think I am going deaf)... I have an idea!--maybe get some quality control, perhaps some pride in making a quality product that is not annoying as hell. I now have a love hate relationship with MS. Used to be all love [...]

UPDATE: Exchanged the Elite for another Elite at Best Buy. The one I exchanged for is quiet. It does not have the same cdRom drive as the old Elite and that was the main noise factor. I can't be more happy with the new system now.

5 out of 5 stars Everything PS3 wants to be!   April 29, 2007

I just purchased the 2nd system sold at my local game shop and I would have waited 24 hours for this. Without a doubt Sony is in trouble. Microsoft has not only fixed all of the glitches with the previous XBox's, they have created a superior machine, at a suiperior price. NEarly silent, faster load time, 120 gig hard drive that didn't move an inch when I downloaded 5 movies on it, who needs BLURAY! This is the system of the millenium gamers, no doubt. Anyone foolish enough to purchase a PS3 should trade it in for an Elite, post haste! And btw, anyone who says HDMI doesn't make a difference, has no idea what they are talking about. I tried the system with both the component hdtv cable and hdmi cable and the hdmi will never be unhooked again!

5 out of 5 stars It's nice, very nice!   April 29, 2007

So, I got to best buy at about 9:45 this morning, they opened at 10. Got the ninth out of the 22 they had. Brought it straight home, opened the box, set it up, plugged it in, so on and so forth. Fired up GoW (that's Gears of War, not god of war) and compared to my buddies premium launch console, it was quiet as a feather falling from the sky. The Black is really the only color the console looks good in. The controllers however look good in both, but the black controllers are a little bit better as part of the grip is matte rather than the smooth of the white one which gets some peoples hands all sweaty. It comes with a working HDMI cable witch is nice, because the only other way to get one of those in the store is to drop about 60$. You can get cheap, good quality ones online however. I just hope some of the other accessories will be made in black now. The hard drive is nice for storage of videos and music, I don't really see much purpose in using it for pictures, but its a nice feature anyways. I only bought this because I was dissapointed with the launch console I had so I returned it about a week after launch. This however is a much better value, only 80 dollars more for stuff that would cost you a lot more. I've learned my lesson that early adopters get screwed and I was glad I returned my premium when I did.

1 out of 5 stars Shame on you Microsoft   April 29, 2007

As the proud owner of a Xbox, and Xbox 360 (premium), I've got to say: What are you doing Microsoft? Or maybe better yet: Where are you going to go today? Do you know how this makes owners of the supposed "premium" edition feel? If I buy this version are you just going to release one with an HD-DVD player tomorrow, or in a few weeks/months?

I think the idea is to put out an incomplete product, reel in the masses, then release subsequent boxes with improvements that they know people will want, and force them to pay over-and-over again.

This really reminds me of what Sega did during the Saturn days, when they came out and said "Saturn is not what we are about" and many of us had just purchased the system, then they turned around and released the Dreamcast. I liked the Dreamcast, but it was a real slap in the face for Saturn owners.

The bottom line is MS is all about the money, they could care less about the gamer. Look at the original Xbox, all the hype of better graphics, more power. As soon as the 360 came out the machine was dead, no more game titles worthwhile coming out on it, no more support in general. Right now I'm using mine as a high priced beer holder.

This machine should have been the initial release of the 360, if the previous ones were not complete, MS shouldn't have released them. Kudos to Sony for releasing a complete product at launch, taking the time to ensure the product doesn't have a high failure rate, and not releasing a new version every few months.

Given all of the problems I've had with my 360, and this release, I'm really considering taking a hammer to my 360 and just playing my PS3 from now on.

3 out of 5 stars Why didn't they just release this bundle at launch?   April 29, 2007

This bundle sounds nice, but makes you wonder how many are going to rebuy the system again. Would have been nice to see this come out last year before everybody had to drop $400 on their 360's. For all its worth I'd rather drop the money into a PS3 than rebuy a 360 just because they make a few minor tweaks to the system.

At least I know the PS3 will work for me. Durablity has always been an issue with the Xbox 360. Not sure I will want to risk dropping a cool $500 + on something that might not last three months.
