1 out of 5 stars Unstable Product   January 4, 2009
I bought this product as I currently using linsys WRTG54GS wireless link router which is working great, thought to get new router and this router is horrible, it works for a minute and then loose wireless connection, tried different configuration but at no avail....sending back for return...

3 out of 5 stars Terrible software, not pleased at all.   January 4, 2009
Opening the box, there are papers and stickers and warnings all over saying, "Install this disk first!" If you know what you're doing, you might skip this step outright.

The software immediately begins installing and talking to the router. There is no status showing what it's doing, there is no progress indicator. The application spins and spins and leaves you to hope it isn't doing anything you would rather it didn't. There seems to be no timeout or reporting system at all - so it will spin until it fails.

For me, this process repeated itself twice. I ran the install, waited for 15 minutes while it showed me it was working (but again, not indicating what it was doing or giving any real progress). At the end an Error occurred (again, not a single detail is reported, just instructions to turn it off and turn it on again).

Deciding this was a useless endeavor, I took the disk out and got into the router via IP. From there, it was semi smooth sailing. I had my addys and routes configured within half an hour.

2 out of 5 stars Stop - Don't Waste Your Money   January 3, 2009

Okay, okay - I should have paid attention to the other reviews about this product. I am an IT pro and thought I wouldn't have the same issues. Okay - I was wrong. The router did setup nicely - no problems. I had a little signal loss now and then - but nothing special. But this morning - the 2.4 ghz band just died. That's right - died - I couldn't get it back. Did I mention I am an IT pro? Every device hooked up through the 2.4ghz band couldn't connect anymore. (2.4ghz is the main band.) Spent hours rebooting / reconfiguring etc. The 5 ghz band stayed up - no worries.

Other things to note about this:

Many people complain about heat - I had it on a glass desk - no heat problems. You might want to try a surface like this.

The USB for data drive is okay - requires passwords to be entered every time your computer books - kind of a pain.

5ghz is not powerful. If you have a long distance, you won't be able to use 5ghz - by the way, this seems to be true with all 5ghz routers, not just this one.

I owned the smaller gigabit version of this and returned it - didn't have as many issues, but only had that one for a week - wanted the storage usb this one has.

By the way, customer support is 100% worthless. When I told the "tech" that the 2.4ghz band dropped but I still was getting the 5ghz band - he asked what I was talking about. Told me there wasn't such a thing as a 5ghz band! Thought I was talking about a computer or something! Spent 30 min on hold, then 60 min with him. In 60 min time we did absolutely nothing (except bring up the router menu!)

I have always owned a Linksys - but had to return this. I just went out and bought a D-Link DIR-825. Has all the same bells and whistles, but so far it works! The 2.4ghz seems stronger - full bars 2 rooms away - the 5ghz about the same and ths Linksys. I haven't had any problems yet with this - but I guess time will tell. (The reviews here in Amazon are much better for the D-Link by the way.

If you are a die-hard Linksys guy like me, just be prepared to be disappointed. Sorry Linksys, but you messed up this one.

4 out of 5 stars So Far, So Good   December 26, 2008

I read the bad reviews on Amazon and elsewhere but decided to take a chance anyway. As my title says, so far, so good. I've got all the computers in my house hooked up to the 2.4 ghz band and my Xbox 360 hooked up to the 5 ghz band. Everything seems to be working perfectly. Setup was kind of a hassle, but that was not the router's fault. I had trouble refreshing the IP address of my cable modem because I neglected to take the battery out before unplugging it.

The 5 ghz band does not reach very far, but it seems to be doing a good job with the Wireless G adapter attached to my 360. Tomorrow I am going to buy the Linksys Wireless N gaming adapter and give that a go.

I'll update this review if my experience changes.

4 out of 5 stars Sexy, Functional, but weak   December 24, 2008
There are two radios - they both work independently. I thought that if I got this new fancy router that I could do away with the old two I had.

Turns out I still need a second one to cover my 2 story 2K SQF house... I have the router smack in the middle of the house.

Setup was a snap... I've never had to reboot it.
