Love my little Sony camera January 7, 2009 Needed a pocket sized camera to have handy and capture the moments in everyday life. The dsc-w170 is wonderful. It has many functions, yet you can start taking great picture right out of the package. We have the Sony Hybrid and love it but considered it too much for hauling around on trips and everyday stuff -- thus this Sony purchase.
Also with a memory card it can dispaly thousands of pictures -- great brag book - can just do a slide show and share!!
E91:01 error January 6, 2009 The camera is good. But only after 2 weeks of use, I got the E91:01 error. (Google for it). Initializing the camera didn't help. Sony's online chat support was profoundly uninformed and unhelpful and asked to send the camera back for repair (shipping costs mine) since as per the "analyst" it has an internal malfunction. So now I have a camera with no flash. I can take pictures fine except have to turn off the flash. Anyways this is going back to Amazon. They already issued an RMA. So buying this camera is a gamble -- a significant number of people get the E91:01 error and Sony's tech support is clueless.
OK but......... January 6, 2009 This is the 2nd Cyber-Shot camera that I have purchased. It is a great little point and shoot. This model however seems to be much more sensitive then the 120 I previously owned. Many of my photos are blurred. I use this model exactly as I did for my 120 and the % of bluured shots is greatly increased on the 170. Seems a mono or Trip Pod will need to be my next purchase although that removes the convenience of ownin a point and shoot.
So the camera and its features are ok but the Jury is still out.
Good beyond belief January 6, 2009 Full of fun features that are easy to use and fun to experiment with. For example, the automatic slide shows on a TV with music is a real eye popper. How can all of this fit in a camera so small?
Lens quality is superb, but this is a Zeiss lens.
The only drawback is having to use Sony's special chips. But I bought a couple of 2 GIG cards on super sale. And, the cost of digital storage is dropping faster than the Dow Jones.
The perfect "tweener" camera. It is between the tiny full of compromises cameras and the bigger prosumer cameras. It does not do RAW but then it is a tweener.
Sony Cybershot January 6, 2009 Bought this camera for my 21 year old daughter and she loves it. The screen in the back is just the right size and so far no complaints!
