Battery Life - 650 Cycles Black & Decker 2 Year Warranty

Amazon.com Product Description
Manually adjusting a wrench to fit particular nuts and bolts can be a real hassle, especially in tight spaces. Enter Black & Decker?s battery-powered Auto Wrench, a phenomenally handy tool that opens and closes with the push of a button. Boasting 220 foot-pounds of torque, this wrench is powerful enough to handle most household tasks, from car repair to fixing leaks.

The Auto Wrench is not meant to replace specialty tools like pipe or torque wrenches, but the jaws open wide enough (up to 1-1/4-inch) so that it could conceivably replace a range of manual wrenches sitting in your toolkit. This is an ideal product for someone looking to buy a wrench that?s both easy to use and versatile. At 8-inches, you could toss it in the silverware drawer and whip it out when you need it.

The area where this wrench really shines is in hard-to-reach spots where mobility is obscured, such as under sinks. A typical situation where the Auto Wrench would help might be one in which you?re awkwardly reaching for a nut underneath the kitchen faucet. With a comparable manual wrench, it?s conceivable you would fumble around with the adjusting mechanism for minutes on end, and then toss a fit. With the Auto Wrench, you?d simply press a button (positioned where you rest your thumb) and the jaws would open or close to your specifications.

We were a bit skeptical when we learned the Auto Wrench takes AA batteries and doesn?t include a rechargeable battery. This means you?ll need to keep some extra batteries around the house ? or buy some rechargeable batteries -- if you use it frequently. However, the wrench isn?t a power hog by any means. Black & Decker says you can get 650 cycles out of two AA batteries, which should be plenty for most people.

1 out of 5 stars Nice idea, bad execution   November 30, 2008

I got one for my birthday in June 2008. The wrench jaws operate smoothly but the wrench is not strong enough to loosen tight bolts. Many a time, I've come close to tearing apart the claws, and have had to throw it aside to use a real wrench that got the job done. So, for easy jobs like loosening nuts on a bike, this will work, but for real work, this wrench is not worthy of sitting in my tool box.

Thought I was getting a good deal until I saw the same item in sawgrass Mall in Ft. Lauderdale for $10.00. That was upsetting!

5 out of 5 stars Great Gift   October 12, 2008

This was purchased as a Christmas gift for my son-in-law, so it's hard to review. I know he'll love it! Service was great and arrived as promised.

4 out of 5 stars Handy little tool   August 12, 2008

It's a handy little wrench, with just a few drawbacks.

What I liked:
Quick and easy adjustments
Nice grip

What I didn't like:
Philips screwdriver required to replace batteries
No "hold" button to keep the tool from accidentally powering on

I'd give it 5 stars if at least one of the cons were fixed. I wouldn't need to replace the batteries that much if it didn't accidentally power on, and it wouldn't be such a pain to replace the batteries that often if it wasn't for the screw.

1 out of 5 stars needs work   August 7, 2008

I've been through 3 of these already. At first it seems great, especially on one handed jobs.It has come in very handy with jobs that require two wrenches. It eventually will break. The motor will become too week. Black & Decker is however very quick to send a replacement. If they can make this tool's motor stronger, then it would be a great one to own. It's defiantly not meant to be an every day tool.
